ABOUT DAVID HALL
David Hall was the 20th Governor of Oklahoma serving from January 11, 1971 to January 13, 1975. He was born in Oklahoma City, graduated from Classen High School and The University of Oklahoma, and earned a law degree from The University of Tulsa. He served as Assistant County Attorney for Tulsa County and was Tulsa County District Attorney from 1962 through 1966. He defeated incumbent Republican Governor Dewey Bartlett in the closest gubernatorial election in state history.
As governor, Hall focused on education and transportation issues. The Hall Administration was opposed by the stateâs largest newspaper, The Daily Oklahoman, which led to his unsuccessful re-election bid in 1974. State Representative David Boren won the nomination of the Democratic Party and became the 21st Governor of Oklahoma. Three days after leaving office on January 13, 1975, Hall was indicted on federal racketeering and extortion charges. Upon his conviction two months later for bribery and extortion, he became the first Oklahoma governor to be convicted of criminal acts committed during his tenure. He served 19 months of a three-year sentence at the Federal Correctional Institution in Tucson, Arizona. When he was released from prison in 1978, he moved to La Jolla, California, where he has been a successful sales executive and a Senior Olympics athlete competing in basketball and tennis. His book Twisted Justice, published in 2012, goes behind the scenes of his conviction and imprisonment and is available through our bookstore.
